The heritage
The Story of the Storm Glass
The storm glass is one of the world’s most fascinating weather instruments, a unique blend of science, maritime heritage, and timeless craftsmanship. For more than 250 years, it has been associated with the sea and the sailors who depended on understanding the ever-changing forces of nature.
Where it began
The Origins
The origins of the storm glass date back to the mid-18th century. Although its true inventor remains unknown, storm glasses were already being sold in England long before they became widely recognised. The sealed glass contains a carefully balanced solution of camphor, alcohol, distilled water, and salts that forms beautiful crystal patterns as environmental conditions change.
1831 to 1836
Admiral Robert FitzRoy and HMS Beagle
The storm glass became famous through Admiral Robert FitzRoy, the distinguished British naval officer, meteorologist, and captain of HMS Beagle. During the Beagle’s historic voyage around the world from 1831 to 1836, FitzRoy commanded the expedition while the young naturalist Charles Darwin conducted the research that would later shape the theory of evolution.
As captain, FitzRoy was responsible for the safety of the ship and her crew. Alongside traditional instruments such as the barometer, thermometer, and compass, he used the storm glass to observe changing weather conditions. He believed that the crystal formations inside the glass could provide valuable indications of approaching weather changes, helping sailors prepare for the challenges ahead.
After the storms of 1859
A Maritime Icon
Following devastating storms around the British Isles in 1859, FitzRoy became a pioneer in modern weather forecasting. Storm glasses, often known as FitzRoy Storm Glasses, were distributed to fishing ports throughout Britain to help mariners assess weather conditions before setting sail. Although the storm glass never replaced the precision of the mercury barometer, it became an enduring symbol of maritime navigation and exploration.
A living display
Science and Beauty
Today, scientists generally agree that the crystal formations are influenced primarily by changes in temperature and environmental conditions rather than accurately predicting future weather. Yet this is precisely what makes every storm glass unique. The constantly evolving crystal patterns create a living display that changes with its surroundings, making each piece both fascinating and beautiful.
